AB 118: The Alternative and Renewable Fuel and Vehicle Technology Program
Assembly Bill 118: The Alternative and Renewable Fuel and Vehicle Technology Program
AB 118 created the Alternative and Renewable Fuel and Vehicle Technology Program in California, which authorizes the California Energy Commission to utilize public funding to catalyze the development and deployment of innovative technologies aimed at transforming California’s fuel and vehicle types away from petroleum use.i The increased use of alternative and renewable fuels, along with the deployment of clean vehicles and a reduction in vehicle miles traveled, supports California’s commitment to curb greenhouse gas emissions, reduce petroleum use, and improve air quality. Alternative and renewable fuels include electricity, hydrogen, natural gas, biomethane, ethanol, renewable diesel, and biodiesel.ii AB 118 provides critical incentives needed in the transportation sector to spur private investment in these emerging technologies in order for the industry to meet its fair share of emissions reductions for California’s climate change policies.
